Archives

North Hertfordshire Museums Service is the recognised repository for archaeological material found in North Hertfordshire.

There are charges for curating material from commercially funded fieldwork, found in the Deposits Policy, which you can download below. The Policy also provides information on standard box size etc. The Policy is reviewed every year and applies to all the museums in Hertfordshire that accept archaeological archives.

Custom searches

It is possible for staff and volunteers of the Museum Service to carry out a search for you and there may be charges. Customised searches (for non-commercial research) are free for the first twenty minutes. Thereafter, there will be a charge of £45 per hour.

Collections

The majority of our archaeological collections are stored at Burymead Museums Resource Centre in Hitchin; researchers may consult them by appointment.

There are particularly important collections of Iron Age and Romano-British material from excavations at Baldock, including the largest collection of human burials from any Roman site in Britain, Lower Palaeolithic flints from Hitchin, prehistoric material from the site at Blackhorse Road in Letchworth Garden City and medieval finds from the deserted village of Caldecote.
