About this objectManuscript notebook on ‘The History and Antiquities of the Town and Parish of Hitchin, in Hertfordshire’ by Isaac James (12 July 1759-28 December 1828). It is said to have been ‘Begun July 23, 1785, at Hitchin. Begun again, in this present manuscript, October 25, 1817, at Bristol, the former Collections being transcribed into it and numerous Articles added’. It consists principally of extracts ‘from Authentic Historians, Manuscripts, and various of the sources of Information, particularly the printed Accounts of Norden, Chauncy, Salmon, and Young’. It is in a buff cover with leather title square on spine, with pages numbered i-xxxiv (containing a chronology from 1062 to 1822) and 1-293, with an index beginning on unnumbered page 331. The author notes at the beginning ‘When I was at Hitchin, in July, 1819, I met with an ample Account of the Place in manuscript, under the following Title, “History of Hitchin, containing an historical Account thereof, from the earliest Period to the present Time...” By William Dunnage, Postmaster, 1815.’ The work consists largely of extracts supplemented by occasional original observations.
The author was born in Hitchin but moved to Bristol, becoming a well known evangelical Baptist preacher.
