About this objectA teapot lid, counterpart of 4.69.2 Chinese Teapot. This lid is marked with Chinese symbols, presumably a signature of the maker. Teapots like this, also known as known as 'Purple sand pots' were created in Yixing. The local clay of Yixing allowed the creation of these highly valued teapots as its high iron content gave potters the ability to maintain high temperatures when firing. Teapots like this are also highly valued as the particular clay absorbs a tiny amount of tea each time it is filled. Across time this allows the user to simply pour in warm water to create tea. Like others from Yixing this teapot is decorated with tree like designs.
