Carausius had himself seized power in 286 and ruled to 293AD. Carausius was an officer in the Roman military who described himself as 'The Spirit of Britain'. Allectus was finance minister to Carausius before assassinating him and taking power for himself. Usurping a usurper.
The reign of Allectus did not last long as he was defeated and killed in battle by an invasion force led by Constantinus Chlorus the Roman Co-emperor. The reverse of the coin depicts a galley, Allectus and his predecessor Carausius wielded naval power in their empires.
