About this objectSmall hand made mica-dusted cup of East Anglian type, dated around 500. Originally, it would have had a semi-circular handle, now broken off. However, the use of mica and the firing technology are Romano-British traits, indicating that this is a vessel made using Roman techniques but copying Saxon styles. Found at Gaping Lane, Hitchin, in 1932. Hertfordshire Historic Environment Record entry.
This unusual cup is Anglo-Saxon style hand made by a potter using Roman techniques. It shows that the settlers did not wipe out the locals.
