Name/TitleNewspaper cutting: Curly Grimes passes away at Arlesey
About this objectNewspaper cutting of an article relating to the death of "Curly" Grimes a "Great Pre-War Footballer". The article has signs it has previously been pinned to a display, perhaps within the old football museum of Hitchin, or perhaps when in the posession of its previous owner.
The article reads: "Curly Grimes passes away at Arlesey, Great Pre-War Footballer, Played alongside Steve Bloomer with Derby County
Deep regret was occasioned among his many relatives and friends in the district by the death yesterday morning of Mr William John ("Curly") Grimes the former professional footballer of High Street Arlesey.
Fifty years of age, he broke down in health following the tragic death of his son, William, in a motor-cycle mishap four years ago, and that loss played on his mind. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Grimes, of Nightingale Road, Hitchin, he began his football career at St. Mary's School Hitchin. He played for Hitchin St John's when that team was unbeaten for three seasons, and also appeared in the colours of Hitchin Blue Cross. He soon attracted the attention of Hitchin Town, then a semi-professional side, with whom he did good service in the old South-Eastern League days.
At the age of 18 however he signed professional forms for Watford. From there he went to Glossop, then to Bradford City, and finally to Derby County, where he was on the wing with Steve Bloomer. He retired from the game in 1914.
He is survived by Mrs. A.G. Grimes, widow, and his sons Messrs. Harold and Ray Grimes who play for Arlesey Town; and Mr Victor Grimes. Mrs Grimes is the daughter of Mr Fred Furr, of Tilehouse Street, Hitchin.
Other well-known local figures with whom Mr. Grimes was connected were: Mr Algie Grimes of Highbury, Hitchin, brother; the late Mr George Payne of Walsworth Road, Hitchin, brother-in-law; Mr Bob Grimes, Ickleford Road, Hitchin. elder brother; Mr George Furr, of Stevenage, and Baldock Road, Letchworth, brother in law; Mr Rom Furr, Letchworth, nephew. Great sympathy will be expressed with the famiky. The funeral is at Hitchin Parish Church on Thursday at 2.30"
