Corinthian Football Club, formed in 1882, were a notable early football team formed of the best amateur players from public schools and universities. Corinthians played and defeated some of the best professional teams in the country. Famous for an ethos of "fair play", as far as the Corinthians team was concerned "a gentleman would never commit a deliberate foul". Should a penalty have been given against the team their goalkeeper would leave his position and present an open goal. If the team received a penalty, their captain would step up to fire the ball over the crossbar.
Corinthians were also known for popularising football during tours around the world. Top Brazillian team Corinthians Paulista were named in honour of the English team's visit to the country. Spanish giants Real Madrid adopted a white shirt as part of their football kit in honour of the team.
The author of this book, Frederick Norman Creek turned out for Corinthians during his time at Cambridge University and was associated with the team throughout the 1920s. Norman Creek played once for the full England national team and five times for the England national amateur team.
Creek won the Military Cross for his service during the First World War and also went on to serve as Flight Lieutenant in the Second World War.
Following retirement Creek went on to manage the Great Britain Olympic Football Team during the 1950s and 60s.
