About this objectBlack and white photo (head and shoulders) of Joseph McCall (1886-1965) of Preston North End. Joseph wears a shirt with a laced opening at the top. The shirt, in the Preston team's iconic white colour, shines out of this black and white card.
McCall signed for Preston in 1905 and played his first match at the beginning of the 1905-06 season. McCall, a defender, was known as an organiser of the team and a good leader.
He was called up to play for England in 1913 and the Preston defender scored in his first match, against Wales. The First World War stopped Joseph's fledgling England career in its tracks. The first England international after the war, played out in 1920 and saw Joseph return to the team aged 34.
