Name/TitleHitchin Church from the South-East: pencil drawing
About this objectSt Mary's Church, Hitchin: pencil drawing by F L Griggs. The drawing shows the south porch and tower of the church, with gravestones in the foreground.
The drawing is undated and it is not clear if it is listed in Comstock’s catalogue of the artist’s known work (he concedes that there are many drawings in private collections he was unable to catalogue). In the centenary exhibition held at Hitchin Museum in 1976, a date of about 1910 was suggested, but it is not known on what grounds. On the other hand, Comstock lists a set of three drawings of St Mary’s made in 1897 for a projected collection on Old Hitchin that was never completed: this may be the one described as ‘Hitchin Church from the South-East’.
A reproduction edition limited to 60 copies was published by North Hertfordshire Museums Service in 1978, of which no 38 is in the Museum’s collection.
