About this object‘Turbans and Tails; or, Sketches in the unromantic East’, book by Reverend Alfred J Bamford (1849-1929). Bamford ministered in both Calcutta and Shanghai in the later 1800s. Interested in both zoology and art, he settled in Letchworth Garden City in 1907, playing a large part in the Letchworth Natural History Society and painting many landscapes of local scenes, which we hold in our collection.
This book includes sketches inspired by his times in the east and has been referenced by many in their studies of India and China. The front cover depicts stereotypical Hindu and Chinese people.
