About this objectKern was born in Salzburg and studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts before making a name as a religious artist. Travelling throughout Europe, he settled permanently in England in 1938, living in both Letchworth Garden City and Hitchin. The sitter for this portrait was Maureen Bentley, who was working at the time as a volunteer ambulance driver in London.
