Fortesque was Letchworth Garden City's first Catholic parish priest and arrived to minister to the towns first Catholic settlers. He found a site in Pixmore Way for a temporary church, the little church dedicated to St Hugh of Lincoln, opened in September 1908. Fortesque was not just any ordinary parish priest he was also a renowned scholar who achieved a rare triple doctorate in Divinity and Philosophy. He travelled widely across Europe and the Middle East and was reputed to be able to speak an amazing 11 languages! As well as being a polyglot he was a polymath.
Fortesque composed music and wrote books and was even an accomplished artist, creating works like this one. Fortesque died aged just 49 in 1923 and was laid to rest among his parishioners in Letchworth Cemetery.
