About this objectBook, Sorrelsykes, by Harold Armitage. Armitage (1867-1963) was a publishing editor and artist, born in Heeley, Sheffield. His father was from Whiston and the book recounts reminiscences of the author’s childhood in Whiston and nearby Treeton (under the disguise of Sorrelsykes and Gildingside). It includes accounts of his great-grandfather and the Stenton family. He also describes what appear to be Guilthwaite Hall and Brampton Old Hall. He includes the full text of a local version of a Mummers play, ‘The Peace Egg’, performed in Whiston.
By 1910, Armitage was living at Fieldhead, Eastholm Green, Letchworth Garden City.
