About this objectStraw boater worn by Angel Peebles as part of her school uniform for summer. Angel was a student at Princess Helena College in Preston, between 1954 and 1960.
Princess Helena College operated from Temple Dinsley, a large house with grounds, in Preston, near Hitchin. The boarding school was originally formed in London and relocated to its Hertfordshire home in 1935, the school closed in the summer of 2021. Museum staff were invited to Princess Helena ahead of its closure to look for objects which would help tell the story of the school in the future. This straw boater was already on display at the school, in a case focusing on old uniform.
For most of the school's existence, it was a single sex girls school. It accepted boys from 2019.
