The book was about the school known as Old Hale Way School between 1940-1955, Bessemer School - named after Henry Bessemer of Charlton, between 1955-1974 and finally Hitchin School between 1974-1988.
When the school building was knocked down in October 1992 former student Bob Prebble was inspired to write a book on school history. He was able to write his book following appeals in the local press to find information and objects. The book launch was staged on 9 November 2002 at the British Schools Museum in Hitchin.
