About this objectA notice welcoming former pupils of a Hitchin School. It reads "Welcome! All ex-Old Hale Way and Bessemerians 1940-1970".
The school in question was known as Old Hale Way School between 1940-1955, Bessemer School - named after Henry Bessemer of Charlton, between 1955-1974 and finally Hitchin School between 1974-1988.
When the school building was knocked down in October 1992 former student Bob Prebble was inspired to write a book on school history. He was able to write his book following appeals in the local press to find information and objects. This notice may perhaps have been used during the launch of the book 'Before the Paint was Dry' at the British Schools Museum on 9 November 2002.
