About this objectMug reading 'Hitchin School 1974-1988' and carrying the logo of the school.
Hitchin School was founded in 1940 and closed in 1988, it went by three different names across its lifetime. Old Hale Way School between 1940-1955, Bessemer School between 1955-1974 and finally Hitchin School between 1974-1988.
The school building was demolished in October 1992 which led former student Bob Prebble to begin to create a book about the school's history. The book 'Before The Paint Was Dry' was published in 2002 following Bob's appeals in the local press to find information and objects to illustrate the history of the school.
This mug forms part of a donation of objects and archive that Bob Prebble used in writing his book. A photo of a mug appears in the book where Bob explains that the mug was produced to mark the closure of the shool and that the badge design remained constant during the time the school went by the name Hitchin School as this was the standard badge adopted for all Hitchin Schools. In the book the mug was courtesy of Richard Walker and photographed by Bob Prebble.
