About this objectA stick like this one is usually used when the morris men perform the morris dance. The dance is based on rhythmic stepping with the stick being used to match the rhythm of the dance. The morris dancers strike their sticks together as part of the dance which is why this example is worn at the top. Morris performances usually contain six or eight men. Other objects can also be used in morris performances, such as swords and handkerchiefs.
Upon donation the Offley Morris Men explained that their group was known for using long sticks like this one, rather than short sticks, in their performances. The members went on to say that they collected their sticks from local trees and that the sticks made a better sound in performances if left for a year before use.
The Offley Morris Men were founded in 1955 and gave their farewell tour in 2016. They performed around the country and also internationally
