About this objectA cash box used at Nicholls, the drapers shop of Hitchin. When the drawer is opened the bell rings as it would have done many decades ago. It was made pre-WWII, before till printers were invented, so receipts were made with a carbon paper till roll pulled through the rectangular opening. The cashier then writes on the details of the purchase and hands a copy to the customer and keeps one for the shop’s records.
After Nicholls closed its doors the cash box was acquired by Ian Stead who then gave it to Ashwell Museum who subsquently used it as their own cash box for admission fees for many years.
