About this objectMinute book for the Local Board of the Urban Sanitary District of Hitchin 1873-1877. This is the first minute book for the board and details their meetings. Including their founding meeting at the old Hitchin Town Hall on 24 December 1873. It also contains details including, names, street of residence and 'calling' (or profession), of the original members. These include people such as William Ransom the noted pharmaceutical manufacturer. Amongst the detail in the minute book are copies of letters from residents which had been read out to the board at meetings, like a letter from Thomas Priest who objected to the building of a sewer across his land in the Burymead area of Hitchin.
The Local Board worked on matters such as supply of water and sewage with the aim of improving the health of the town of Hitchin. This book and the books 2019.6 and 7 were rescued from a skip by a council employee during the local government merger of 1974 which formed North Hertfordshire District Council.
