About this objectThe Georgian House by Hugh and Amos Phillips.
Hugh and Amos Phillips were the sons of Frederick W. Phillips, a naturalist and antiquarian who purchased the Georgian era Manor House on Bancroft in Hitchin in 1883. The Manor House became the Phillips family antique shop which was run by many generations until 2020. The Phillips family specialised in all things Georgian.
In this book Hugh and Amos Phillips extol the virtues of houses in the Georgian period. They write "the simple Georgian style had not so far received the full share of attention from architects and decorators - it had not had its enthusiastic exponent". The book contains colour illustrations including features of The Manor House.
A painting of Hugh Phillips during his First World War service in the Royal Flying Corps is on display in our museum (object 7925).
Objects 2020.30.1-10 were donated in March 2020 by the last Phillips to operate the family business.
