About this objectShort account of Old English Pottery by F.W. Phillips and an introduction to the study of Chinese porcelain by Reverend G.A. Schneider written in 1901.
Frederick W. Phillips was a naturalist and antiquarian who purchased the Georgian era Manor House on Bancroft in Hitchin in 1883. The Manor House became the Phillips family antique shop which was run by many generations until 2020. The Phillips family specialised in Georgian antiques (mostly furniture) but in this case F.W. Phillips uses his expertise to write about Old English Pottery.
F.W. Phillips writes that he wants this book to be an introduction to young collectors on what to look for in English pottery. Phillips tells the reader that if done correctly the purchase of pottery can be a sound investment and also help the country retain its national heritage and prevent pottery leaving the country to buyers in the USA.
Phillips advises the reader of what to look at within several London museums, including the earthenware collection of Sir A. Wollaston Franks at the British Museum. He advises the purchase of the book 'Handbook of English Earthenware' by Professor Church, which he states can be bought at a cheaper price of 1/6 from the book stall of the Victoria and Albert Museum rather than other shops.
The book includes contemporary 1901 prices "in the hope that the young collector may espy treasure in some unregarded place, and thus reap the reward of knowledge".
