About this objectA booklet about The Hermit of Hertfordshire. James Lucas The Hermit of Hertfordshire became a recluse on the death of his mother. Lucas sealed himself in the kitchen of his family mansion at Redcoat Green until his death. During his lifetime many people came to speak with him through the bars on his kitchen window. So much so that Lucas became a celebrity, inspiring booklets like this one and a range of souvenirs, some of which are in the collection of the museum.
This booklet, re-written from an article in the Hertfordshire Express tells his story. This booklet is one of the twenty-first thousand run of prints but our museum also holds holds a Forty-third thousand print account of his life.
This belonged to the donor's late wife who, who lived in Romford but her grandmother lived in a cottage by the Hermit pub. She spent some of her childhood there evacuated from London.
