Name/TitleDecember election 2019 Conservative Party election flyer (Hitchin & Harpenden)
About this objectA flyer promoting the Conservative candidate for Hitchin & Harpenden in the December election of 2019, sent to the resident of Flat 7 Balliol Chambers in Hollow Lane, Hitchin. The December election of 2019 was dominated by the subject of Brexit and the argument around 'getting Brexit done' and the 'oven ready deal' of Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The issue of Brexit was incredibly divisive across the country and also within Hitchin & Harpenden. Peter Lilley the Conservative MP during the 2016 referendum backed leave whereas Hitchin & Harpenden voted to remain by 60.21%. As such Bim Afolami the incumbent MP since 2017 steered notably clear of any mention of Brexit in his 2019 flyer, focusing instead on prevention of the expansion of Luton Airport (which would impact the population who live under the flightpath), 'more money for Hitchin & Harpenden's Schools' and to 'Protect our environment'.
Bim Afolami retained the seat but with a 6% loss in vote percentage.
