Name/TitleDecember election 2019 Liberal Democrat election flyer (North East Herts)
About this objectA flyer promoting the Liberal Democrats candidate for North East Hertfordshire in the December election of 2019, sent to residents of Grove House in Baldock. The December election of 2019 was dominated by the subject of Brexit and the argument around 'getting Brexit done' and the 'oven ready deal' of Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson. North East Herts is one of the two parliamentary areas within the North Hertfordshire district - an area including the settlements of Letchworth, Baldock and Royston.
The issue of Brexit was incredibly divisive across the country and also within North East Hertfordshire. Sir Oliver Heald the incumbent Conservative MP backed remain during the EU referendum of 2016 whereas the population of North East Hertfordshire voted to leave by 51.3%. On Brexit the candidates of the three main parties in North East Hertfordshire all echoed the national party leadership. The Liberal Democrats were the most vocal opponents of Brexit. Their national position was to 'Stop Brexit' which they claimed would 'wreck our economy and risk the end of the United Kingdom'. North East Herts Liberal Democrat candidate Amy Finch presents this on the front of her flyer declaring 'Stop Brexit Build a Brighter Future'. The national Liberal Democrat party pledged to stop Brexit on day one and invest the 'Remain bonus' into public services which Amy Finch also states in her flyer. Finch also pledged to 'invest £11 billion into mental health services', 'fund our schools' and 'tackle the climate emergency'.
Amy Finch finished third in the race for election but with an improved vote percentage of 7.8%.
