Archive collection

The museum has a vast archive relating to the history of the area, covering subjects as wide as everyday life in wartime through to ephemera like receipts and advertisements from local businesses. Some archive is on display throughout the museum. Look out for archives relating to the foundation of Letchworth Garden City and others relating to the conscientious objection of local school teacher Richard Morse from military service in World War One.
The Local Studies Centre (open by appointment) is the perfect place for you to carry out local history research and get a close up look at our archival materials. The Centre also has an extensive library covering local archaeology and history, including copies of census data, and computers with access to the web, allowing visitors to search more widely. You may only use pencils or computers for taking notes; some material may be reproduced by scanning or photography, depending on its age and condition, for which there will be a charge.
