The Origins of Hitchin

Hitchin is well known as a historic market town, with a largely unspoilt late medieval to Georgian townscape. 

But its market goes back to a time before they were established by Charter in the High Middle Ages, and archaeological evidence suggests even earlier origins. How far back can we trace the development of a community here, and are there any significant moments in its early history?
