Odd Pots and Foreigners: the end of Roman Britain

The decade after AD 400 is usually thought to witness the collapse of manufacturing industries in Roman Britain.

Pottery, one of the best artefacts for dating sites, seems to disappear immediately from the record until hand-made types associated with Saxon settlers begin to appear. This isn’t the whole story, though, and recently, good evidence has appeared that Roman potting traditions continued, albeit on a small scale, and blended with the newcomers’ styles.
