The Archaeology of Subculture

We tend to think of subcultures as a modern phenomenon, associated particularly with young people, especially those of the working class, but archaeology suggests a more complex story. 

Think ‘punk’, ‘hoodie’, ‘grebo’ and you soon get the idea that it has no relevance to the distant past. Yet archaeology shows us that instead of ancient societies being completely homogenous, they were often composed of subsets of people who were doing things their own way.
