The Roman Amphitheatre at Chester

Often touted as the largest amphitheatre in Britain, and often portrayed as a purely military structure, research started by the speaker and finished by English Heritage shows a more interesting history. 

As a scene of gladiatorial combat and animal hunts, it filled an essential position in bringing Roman culture to Britain, and its intriguing post-Roman history makes it an enduring part of Chester’s cityscape.
