Royston Cave and the Knights Templar

The current standard view of Royston Cave is that it was created and used by the Knights Templar, a group founded during the Crusades to defend pilgrims to Jerusalem. 

Their largest preceptory was at Preston, near Hitchin, and they founded the market town of Baldock. But what is their connection, if any, with the cave? Recent research suggests that there was none and that the cave had a more surprising origin and use.
