The Four Elements: exploring ancient religion in North Hertfordshire

Before the growth of chemistry from the sixteenth century on, we in the west thought that there were four elements: earth, air, fire and water.

We tend to think that the idea came from Greek scholarship, but archaeological evidence in North Hertfordshire suggests that its roots stretch back into remote prehistory.
