Outlandish tales investigated by Gerish

Folklore, local traditions in North Herts

William Blyth Gerish was a historian based in Hertfordshire in the early 1900s, and he had a great passion for outlandish tales…

Investigating everything from simple local traditions to grand accounts of dragons, witches and highway robbers, Gerish wrote these dramatic stories of local legend into a series of 19 pamphlets which he produced between 1905 and 1921.

Curator Matt Platt will be diving into these tall tales told by Gerish including the story of ‘a Hertfordshire St George’ and poor Jane Wenham, the accused Witch of Walkern.
