Have you ever spotted something unusual while out walking or digging in the garden and wondered what it might be? 

This workshop is designed for anyone curious about the past and the objects it leaves behind.

Using real archaeological material, you will explore how archaeologists identify and categorise what they find. The session is divided into two 90-minute parts. In the first, you will learn how to sort a varied collection of objects into meaningful groups, from pottery and building materials to stone tools and fossils. The second session introduces the basic principles archaeologists use to estimate age, helping you begin to tell Roman from Victorian, or prehistoric from natural.

You will not become an expert in a day, but you will leave with a clear understanding of how archaeologists recognise and interpret finds, and with practical skills you can apply yourself.
