The Ice Age in North Hertfordshire

Ice Age, local history in North Herts, Archaeology

The Pleistocene Ice Age lasted about two million years, during which time there were massive changes to the climate.

There were periods of intense cold, as we would expect, but also times when it was warmer than today. The first human ancestors left Africa during this time and gradually colonised Europe, including Britain during the warmer phases. Our ancestors eventually arrived about 35,000 years ago, and all these people left their mark.
