Steppin’ On The Blues for Black History Month – Interactive Dance Talks

Discover the history, music and social impact of African American and Black British dance traditions in this two-part Black History Month series.

Led by experienced dance artists and educators, these engaging sessions combine talk, demonstration and optional participation. Explore dance styles including Vernacular Jazz, Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Jive and Swing, alongside Black British dance traditions from Ska and Reggae to Soul, Lovers’ Rock, House and Jungle.

No dance experience is required, and participants are welcome to join in as much or as little as they wish. All activities can be adapted for those who prefer to remain seated.

£40 per session Attend one session or both.

Session One Saturday 10 October, 12.30pm to 4.30pm The Roots of Vernacular Jazz Explore African American Vernacular Jazz dance and its influence on popular dances of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, including Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Jive and Swing.

Session Two Saturday 14 November, 12.30pm to 4.30pm From Swing to the Black British Experience Discover how jazz music and dance developed in Britain from the 1930s onwards, alongside Black British dance styles including Swing, Ska, Reggae, Soul, Lovers’ Rock, House and Jungle.
