Join us for a focused half-day course designed to teach you how to read, interpret, and utilise maps as a powerful source of information about the past. This is a practical, hands-on session where you will gain confidence in map analysis. We will explore various mapping conventions, from the detailed insights of old estate maps and aerial photographs to the work of the Ordnance Survey.
A core benefit of the course is the opportunity to handle genuine maps spanning the 17th to the 20th centuries. You will also learn where to find reliable digital resources online. By the session’s close, you will be equipped to use maps confidently to uncover stories and details about history.

1:30 pm: Registration
1:40 pm: A brief history of cartography
2:15 pm: Practical session with historic maps
3:00 pm: Modern mapping and the Ordnance Survey
3:30 pm: Practical session with Ordnance Survey and Google Earth
4:15 pm: Final discussion and questions
4:30 pm: Course ends
