About this objectBook of fifteen drawings by F L Griggs, intended for publication but never finished. The inscription dates the start of the work to 1898, but several of the plates are dated 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1902. Two are left unfinished. It contains 112 untrimmed pages of Whatman paper, case bound in green buckram. Five leaves have been cut out; one has been inserted and tipped in, while another insert has not been tipped in, both containing drawings.
All the drawings are on right hand pages; the first six are numbered, the seventh is an insertion and eight to fourteen are again numbered. All the numbered drawings (apart from number 15) are given titles.
This unpublished book proof contains pen-and-ink drawings that mix fact and fantasy, with buildings drawn accurately but sometimes moved around to look more interesting. It includes sketches of Courtyard of the ‘George Inn’, Bucklersbury, 1900; The Marketplace 1830; Boot Inn 1889; The Coopers’ Arms Inn Yard 1897; The Bridge 1898.
