About this objectRichard Morse, of Whinbush Road in Hitchin, was a naturalist and a teacher. Like many others, he refused to fight in the war as he believed it to be wrong. He was a strict pacifist and vegetarian on moral grounds. He had to appear before a tribunal to explain his reasons and answer questions. He was given a Certificate of Exemption, on the grounds of health, hardship and his occupation of teaching. He received letters of support stating that his views had been held for many years before the war, showing he was not a coward.
