George Elgar Hicks, Painter of Victorian Life

Join Ros Allwood, our Cultural Services Manager, for a lunchtime talk discussing George Elgar Hicks’s paintings. Ros is an expert on Hicks, having mounted the only exhibition of his work when she worked at London’s Geffrye Museum.
George Elgar Hicks (1824-1914) was an English painter known best for his series of large paintings of the 1860s showing naturalistic scenes of London life – Billingsgate fish market, the Bank of England on Dividend Day, the main post office just before the last collection, a large wedding breakfast. In later years he became a well-known society portrait painter.
